Check-In
In the first few days of your program, you must complete the online check-in with EVS in order to activate your SEVIS record.
Check-in is a mandatory process for all J-1 exchange visitors and must be completed before applying for a Social Security number or driver's license.
Part 1
Check-In Application
You must submit the following documents for yourself and any J-2 dependents within 6 days of your arrival:
- Form DS-2019 (signed by the consular officer)
- Passport biographic information page
- J visa
- I-94 record
- Proof of health insurance (click to review requirements)
- Certificate of Completion from the Pre-Arrival Course
Part 2
Orientation
The orientation is conducted via Zoom with an EVS advisor and includes an informational presentation and a chance to ask questions.
Once your check-in application is approved, EVS will email you an invitation to the orientation. Please read the email carefully to confirm dates and times.
Attendance is not mandatory for any J-2 exchange visitors, but it is highly encouraged for J-2 spouses.
Part 3
SEVIS Record Validation
After you attend orientation, EVS will validate your SEVIS record. This will change your record to Active status.
This completes the check-in process and satisfies the US Department of State's regulations for beginning a J program.
