Add/Remove a J-2 Dependent

You will be prompted to provide a scan of your J-2 dependent's passport to your UF department as part of the New International Student Request. Additionally, you must demonstrate that you have adequate funding to support you and your J-2 dependent(s). The minimum funding requirements are:

J-1 Exchange Visitor

$2,266/month

J-2 Spouse

$1,000/month

J-2 Child

$500/month (per child)

To request a form DS-2019 for a dependent after you have already started your program, you must email your EVS advisor. The following materials are required:

  • Scan of each dependent’s passport
  • Proof of sufficient funding:
    • J-2 spouse: $1,000/month
    • J-2 child: $500/month (per child)
  • Proof of appropriate health insurance
    • Coverage for each J-2 dependent must begin on or before the date that you submit their application, not the date they intend to arrive in the US.
      • This means that you must purchase health insurance for when your J-2 dependents are outside the US, even if they have not yet received their visa.
      •  When EVS issues your J-2 dependent's DS-2019, they will automatically be in Active status. Federal regulations require anyone with an active DS-2019 to have active health insurance coverage.
      • There are no exceptions to this requirement.

If any J-2 dependents voluntarily end or legally become ineligible for J-2 status, their form DS-2019 must be canceled.

Potential reasons to remove a J-2 dependent:

  • J-2 dependent will leave the US with no intent to return during the J-1 program
  • J-2 dependent was approved to change from J-2 to another US visa status
  • J-2 dependent child turns 21
  • J-2 dependent child marries
  • J-2 dependent spouse and J-1 exchange visitor divorce

To remove a J-2 dependent, you must email your EVS advisor

Important Considerations

  • If a J-2 dependent's DS-2019 is canceled, and later you request a new DS-2019 for the same dependent:
    • You must pay a $100 EVS processing fee.
    • EVS will issue a new DS-2019 with a different SEVIS ID number, meaning the dependent will need to apply for a new J-2 visa.
