When students arrive at the University of Florida to start their academic program, they need to come to the University of Florida International Center (UFIC) after completing the check-in online process. Students may enter the U.S. up to 30 days before the program start date on their I-20/DS-2019. New students must check-in within 30 days of the program start date; transfer-in students must check-in within 15 days of the program start date on their I-20/DS-2019.
F-1 Student Check-In Process
The new student check-in procedure is a two-step process.
1). You will first complete an on-line check-in process by clicking https://isss.internationalcenter.ufl.edu and then click the LOGIN button. Complete all required steps and click on the button at the top of the page that says Submit Application.
2) After you have completed the online check-in, you will need to come to UFIC at the HUB for an in person check-in. Please bring your passport and I-20 with you.
J-1 Student Check-In Process
When checking in, J-1 students are required to bring their DS-2019, (and previous DS-2019s for SEVIS Transfer students), passport, and visa. J-1 students will get their SEVIS record validated after the drop/add period, which is typically the first week of classes of the semester. If a J-1 student or J-2 dependent needs to travel, students can request a travel signature to be given on the current DS-2019 by bringing it to the Exchange Visitor Services office in 190 HUB.
All international non-UF sponsored students (AMIDEAST, IIE, LASPAU, USAID, VED, FORD, and OAS) must check-in with the Director Debra Anderson.
International students will always see the "No Drop Activity - Add Allowed (TERM YEAR) Restrict Dropping of Courses" hold on their account. This hold is specific to each term and only takes effect after the drop-add deadline for that term and cannot be removed. It is there to prevent international students from falling out of status.
Frequently, students have the immunization hold and the emergency contact hold. To clear the immunization hold, students have to submit immunization documentation to the Health Compliance Office of the Student Health Care Center/Infirmary.
Every semester, additional holds are placed on student accounts; they must be cleared by the student before the student can have access to their course(s). Students must follow these instructions to clear any hold:
- Go to Student Self Service
- Click onto the heading “My Record” under My Online Services
- Click on “Holds”.
- Follow the directions to clear the holds.
- Log out completely, close your browser, and then log back in to verify that the holds were successfully removed.
All international students must report their United States local home physical address (no P.O. Boxes) to the University of Florida as it is required that we have the correct home address for our students at all times.
Students need to set up their GatorLink e-mail account. The Computer Help Desk at the HUB provides assistance to students needing help with the account setup. All important communication from the university will be sent to the student's Gatorlink e-mail account (@ufl.edu). Students can get their University of Florida Identification Card (Gator1Card) at the Bookstore and Welcome Center.
Students with an Assistantship/Fellowship or on-campus employment, will need to apply for a Social Security Number (SSN) at the Social Security Administration Office. The application process will require the student's immigration documents (passport, visa, I-94 record, Continued Attendance I-20 or DS-2019), the offer letter, the UFIC verification letter and Social Security application form. Additional information will be provided during check-in.
