On-Campus Employment During Official Breaks

F-1 students may work more than 20 hours per week on campus during official university breaks, specifically:

  • Thanksgiving Break
  • Winter Break (categories apply)
  • Spring Break
  • Summer Break (categories apply)
    • Important: Summer is not considered a break for students who:

      • were admitted to their program in that summer, or
      • had their F-1 status become effective or reinstated in that summer

For these students, that specific summer is a required term, and on-campus employment is limited to 20 hours per week.

There is no maximum number of hours that F-1 students may work during official school break periods under federal immigration regulations, provided they are otherwise maintaining valid F-1 status and are eligible for on-campus employment. Please note, however, that the University of Florida may have its own employment policies regarding overtime. Regardless of whether a student has one UF position or multiple UF positions, university policies may limit the total number of hours worked to avoid overtime. Departments with questions regarding overtime, concurrent employment, or other UF employment-related policy matters should consult with UF Human Resources. Internal HR offices may also be able to verify multiple UF appointments through the university's HR system; please check with your HR Liaison. Students who hold multiple UF appointments should discuss their work schedules with each employer to ensure compliance with applicable department and university policies.

The official University of Florida academic calendar provides the specific dates and deadlines for each break.

  • All dates below are listed in MONTH/DAY/YEAR format.
  • Dates may change if the official UF academic calendar is updated.
  • Working more than 20 hours per week on campus during the dates provided within does not affect an F-1 student’s immigration status.
  • UF employment policies may still prohibit working more than 40 hours per week to avoid overtime. Please check with your HR liaison.
  • This page is updated each year by late October or early November for the upcoming Thanksgiving, Winter, Spring, and Summer breaks.
