Dr. José Valentino Ruiz, Associate Professor and Founder of the Music Business & Entrepreneurship program in the University of Florida School of Music, has received five international awards for A Symphony of Flavor: The Human Flourishing Suite, an interdisciplinary project that reimagines the relationship between music, culinary arts, healthcare, hospitality, and human flourishing.

The project received four honors from the International Music Leadership Award and an Absolute First Prize from the Vivaldi International Music Competition, recognizing both its artistic excellence and its innovative interdisciplinary vision.

The awards include:

The project was created through a collaboration between Dr. José Valentino Ruiz, Executive Chef Thomas Mandzik of The Tampa Club, and Dr. Jesse Tillman Pitts of Aravine Consulting. Together, the collaborators sought to answer a simple but profound question:

What becomes possible when food and music are intentionally designed to work together?

Rather than presenting a traditional concert followed by dinner, or simply providing background music during a meal, the collaborators designed an immersive experience in which every musical composition was written specifically to accompany a corresponding culinary course. Each movement represented a chapter in a larger emotional narrative, guiding guests through themes of anticipation, curiosity, discovery, perseverance, gratitude, and community.

The world premiere was presented at The Tampa Club in Tampa, Florida, where guests experienced an original symphonic jazz suite synchronized with a five-course fine dining menu and curated wine pairings. The evening brought together leaders from healthcare, higher education, hospitality, senior living, neuroscience, business, and the arts to explore how intentionally designed multisensory experiences can enrich quality of life.

Beyond its artistic achievement, A Symphony of Flavor reflects Dr. Ruiz's growing body of interdisciplinary research examining how music can contribute to human flourishing across healthcare, aging, dementia care, hospitality, and community engagement. The project builds upon collaborations involving clinicians, researchers, chefs, entrepreneurs, and arts leaders who share a common belief that creativity can play a meaningful role in improving well-being and strengthening human connection.

Each composition was carefully crafted to complement not only the flavors and textures of each course but also the psychological and emotional journey of the evening. The result was a unified artistic experience demonstrating how music, culinary arts, and hospitality can work together to create memorable moments of belonging, reflection, and joy.

As both a composer and researcher, Dr. Ruiz views the project as an example of the increasingly interdisciplinary role artists can play in addressing complex societal challenges.

"This project demonstrates that music is not simply entertainment—it can become a catalyst for human connection, hospitality, wellness, and interdisciplinary innovation. When artists collaborate with chefs, healthcare professionals, researchers, and community leaders, we begin to discover entirely new ways that creativity can improve the human experience."

The recognition further highlights the University of Florida's commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship and innovation. Dr. Ruiz's work continues to bridge the arts with entrepreneurship, healthcare, artificial intelligence, cultural diplomacy, and the creative economy, illustrating how artistic research can generate meaningful impact across multiple sectors.
