Title: Comparative Perspectives on Social Issues in Sport
Project Description: Pervasive social issues in our society including race, gender, and social class are highly dependent on culture. Sport, as a reflection of society, plays a vital role in building and sustaining communities. Sport is therefore an important context in which social issues are both created and resisted. Students need to reflect on these issues to better understand the impact both locally and globally. This project will allow students to collaborate to compare issues of social class, gender, or race within youth sport, college sport, community/club (non-competitive) sport, and/or professional sport. Students will select one social issue (either race, gender, or social class) and compare it across cultural contexts in a single area of sport. Students will analyze new knowledge to learn more about the global context and apply it in their own context.
Learning Outcomes:
  • Think critically and articulate how sports impacts society as well as how society impacts sports through an international perspective
  • Articulate and explain the major sociological issues associated with gender, social class, race, and media in sport
  • Apply social issues within physical education of special populations (e.g. youth, individuals with disabilities, etc.)
  • Reevaluate personal perspectives on race, gender, and class relations in sport through international exchange
  • Appreciate cultural difference in learning backgrounds and language differences
  • Apply technology to international exchange of ideas
  • Communicate effectively across multiple platforms and types (e.g. oral, written, body language, etc.)
  • Collaborate effectively on a mutual product
  • Build relationships through team cohesion strategies/practices
