Title: Applying Human Physiology and the Pillars of Health Across Borders
Project Description: By completing three graded activities: Icebreaker activity, Collaborative Activity, and Final Reflection Activity, students are expected to engage in effective communication within a team comprising 4-6 members to discuss the health strategies and the physiological basis for the pillars of health and wellbeing. A live introductory and closing session will be available before and after the virtual exchange component takes place, serving as a “virtual guest speaker” opportunity that brings together the instructors from both institutions. Students from the UF side are expected to serve as the leaders for discussing the basics of human physiology, while those from the TEC side are expected to lead the conversation on the pillars of health, given the course focus on health and wellbeing (five pillars).
Learning Outcomes:
  • To foster connections with peers from different institutions by sharing personal information, interests, and future plans.
  • To promote intercultural communication, mutual understanding, and respect while encouraging creativity and self-expression within a safe and supportive setting.
  • To foster reflection, cultural awareness, knowledge sharing, critical thinking, curiosity, action, and effective communication within an international collaboration context
Participating Countries: Mexico
Number of Participants: 230 UF students; 300+ Tecnologico de Monterrey students
Discipline: Applied Physiology & Kinesiology
UF Course Code & Name: APK 2105c - Applied Human Physiology with Laboratory
Project Duration: 5-6 weeks
Activity Type(s):
  • Student-to-Student Dialogue
  • Student-to-Student Project
  • Virtual Guest Speaker
Time allotted to each activity:
  • Individual Work: 1 hour per week
  • Asynchronous Activities: ~1 hour every week during the program
Technology Tools:
  • Padlet
  • Zoom
  • Google Docs
Sequence of Activities:
  • Icebreaker: Focus on SDG 3.4, related to the global goal of keeping people happy and healthy, especially when it comes to mental wellbeing. Students record an introduction video to Padlet, sharing on topics related to happiness, health, and general wellbeing. This is after a live guest speaker sort of session that introduces students to the program via Zoom.

  • Collaboration Activity: Students share in a post (video, note, audio) about the 4 pillars of a healthy lifestyle: physical activity, nutrition, mental health, and sleep hygiene. Students then work back-and-forth providing citations on statements and peer commentary.

  • Reflection Activity: Students are asked to take some time to think about their international collaboration experience, and then record a video considering aspects like culture, teamwork, and knowledge sharing. Students are also required to engage with peer posts.
