Title: Tandem UFLUV
Project Description:

This project aims to provide students with opportunities for linguistic immersion outside the classroom. Students will schedule synchronous meetings via Zoom during the semester to engage in cultural exchange topics, using the Seagull platform lessons as conversation guides. During each session, students will meet with peers from partner institutions to discuss topics in Spanish and English.

This virtual exchange is a collaborative learning and peer-teaching initiative, where each student helps improve their partner's language skills by suggesting corrections and providing feedback. The virtual exchange project aims to develop oral skills and foster cultural exchange among university students.

  • Engagement Activity:

Students will introduce themselves through Zoom. During the first group meeting, students will share a screenshot or personal photo representing something meaningful about their identity or culture. Half of the language exchange will be in English and the other half in Spanish. Each student will be expected to correct and help their tandem to improve their linguistic competence in the target language. Part of this activity is to produce a short video, up to 1 minute, in both Spanish and English to establish the starting linguistic level for a comparison at the end of the project. This comparison will be part of the video that will be produced as the final product.

  • Collaboration Activity:

Zoom Synchronous Session: The student pair will organize four meetings throughout the semester at times convenient to all participants. This flexibility ensures that the exchange fits into their schedules. Students will schedule at least four synchronous meetings during the semester to engage in cultural exchange topics using the Seagull platform lessons as conversation guides. Half of the language exchange will be in English and the other half in Spanish. Each student will be expected to correct and help their tandem to improve their linguistic competence in the target language.

  • Reflection Activity:
At the end of the course, students will create two 1-1.5-minute videos. These videos will show what they have learned from the virtual exchange and reflect on how the project improved their cultural understanding and language skills. This video replaces the need for a written reflection, offering a more dynamic format for feedback.
