Exchange Visitor Services (EVS) assists and supports exchange visitors on J-1 status at the University of Florida. EVS helps international students and scholars with their initial adjustment to the university, provides information and advice about immigration regulations, and assists them throughout their stay through cross-cultural programming.
EVS does:
- Host an initial orientation for J-1 exchange visitors
- Provide J-1 visa status advising
- Advise J-1 visitors on employment eligibility
- Advise dependents of J-1 exchange visitors
- Provide travel authorization and advising
- Refer visitors and departments to relevant university offices, services, and programs
- Offer training for host departments
EVS does not:
- Locate housing, childcare, transportation, or funding
- Match prospective J-1 exchange visitors to host departments
- Provide scholarships
- Advise on non-immigration HR matters (hiring process, benefits)
- Provide legal advice about immigration statuses and benefits other than the J visa
UF departments with H, O, TN, E-3 and other employment visa questions should contact Immigration Compliance Services.
UF departments and students with F visa questions should contact International Student Services.
J Program
The J Program, also known as the Exchange Visitor Program, cultivates the exchange of knowledge and collaboration between citizens of the United States and citizens of other countries.
At UF, these exchange visitors may be students, professors, scientists, artists, researchers, interns, and many other roles that foster teaching, research, and the exchange of ideas. Meanwhile, exchange visitors have the opportunity to experience life here in the United States.
UF sponsors eight J visa categories. The four scholar categories are: Student Intern, Professor, Research Scholar, and Short-Term Scholar. The four student categories are: Student Bachelors, Student Masters, Student Doctorate, and Student Non-Degree.
