J-2 Dependents

On July 17, 2026, DHS published a final rule establishing a fixed time period of admission and an extension of stay procedure for J exchange visitors. This rule is expected to be effective on September 15, 2026, and will impact several aspects of the J-visa program regulations. Accordingly, updates to our website content are in progress.

To maintain valid visa status, J-2 dependents are required to:  

  • Maintain current, valid copies of all required documents at all times: 
    • Form DS-2019 
    • Passport 
    • I-94 record 
  • Live with their J-1 exchange visitor (spouse or parent) while in the US 
  • Only work with a valid Employment Authorization Document  
  • Maintain valid health insurance even when outside the US 
  • Obtain a valid travel signature prior to international travel  

J-2 dependents are permitted to attend school in the US on a full-time or part-time basis.
