Intercultural Leadership Institute

The Intercultural Leadership Institute is a semester-long professional development program to help you: (1) develop your own intercultural competence, and (2) learn how to design and facilitate intercultural learning, so that you can be a more effective educator and integrate intercultural learning into courses, programming, or other aspects of your work. Participants will complete a 12-week online program offered through True North Intercultural, Facilitating Intercultural Learning, during which they will develop a plan to incorporate intercultural learning into their work with students, colleagues, or other learners. This action plan will then be presented at a showcase with campus stakeholders and implemented within the next two semesters.

The Office of Global Learning will offer this program in Fall 2024 for a select cohort of faculty and staff who propose an idea for immediate incorporation of intercultural learning into their work with students, colleagues, or other learners and will cover the program fee of $2,500 per participant for the applicants selected for this opportunity.

True North Intercultural Facilitator

Tara Harvey possesses a unique combination of breadth of experience in the field of international education and depth of understanding of the process of developing intercultural competence. She began her career teaching English at a language academy as well as in schools and global corporations in Madrid, Spain. Later, Tara worked as an international student advisor at two schools with large international student populations, Texas A & M University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Tara then earned a Ph.D. in Comparative and International Development Education, specializing in international and intercultural education, from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

Tara has worked as the Academic Director of Intercultural Learning at CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange), integrating intercultural learning frameworks into CIEE’s wide array of study abroad programs and providing coaching, training, and support to resident staff around the world involved in facilitating students’ intercultural learning. She started True North Intercultural, LLC, in 2016 in response to numerous requests from universities – as well as a recognition of a deep need – to provide that same type of intercultural coaching, training, and support to their faculty and staff.
