This asynchronous online training focuses on the foundational elements needed to understand and implement virtual exchange. Through virtual exchange, faculty can connect their UF classes with students and faculty abroad to collaborate on assignments, acquire global perspectives on a given discipline, and develop intercultural competence skills. 

This training is available year-round. Eligible participants can click the registration button at the bottom of this page to gain access to the course in Canvas, the Learning Management System of the University of Florida.

Training Content

Module 1
Introduction to Virtual Exchange

  • Benefits of virtual exchange
  • Types of virtual exchanges
  • Defining a virtual exchange topic

Module 2
Preparing for Virtual Exchange

  • Review resources and strategies to facilitate virtual exchange logistics
  • Create strategies to encourage students to examine and develop their intercultural competency 
  • Identify resources to find a VE partner and traits that make two partners compatible

Module 3
Sequencing & Task Design

  • Recognize the elements of measurable student learning objectives
  • Apply telecollaborative task design theory to virtual exchange using the typology of 12 different types of tasks and task sequences identified by O’Dowd and Waire
  • Summarize the process for choosing technology for VE and resources available at UF to help

Eligibility:

  • UF faculty and staff with educational responsibilities (An international partner is not required for UF participants prior to beginning or completing this training)
  • UF graduate students/TAs
  • International partners who are collaborating with UF faculty on a virtual exchange project

Mode:

  • Asynchronous online training, completed at your own pace

Award:

  • All participants will receive a digital badge upon completion of the program. UF faculty and students will receive 250 miles toward the Global Teaching and Learning Certificate after submitting their digital badge in the Center for Teaching Excellence Passport Portal.

Duration:

  • 3.5 hours total
