The Global Learning Excellence Awards are intended to recognize UF faculty who have gone above and beyond in their curriculum internationalization efforts. Provided by the UFIC Office of Global Learning (OGL), these awards celebrate excellence in global learning opportunities that support OGL’s mission of ensuring all UF students have opportunities to gain global perspectives and engage in international interactions, without the need to travel abroad. Global learning projects are embedded in on-campus and online courses or campus initiatives and are not associated with physical mobility (study/research/internships abroad). They may involve teaching approaches using technology, international collaborations, and campus and community resources.

Global Learning Excellence Awards

Each award recipient will receive a plaque of recognition and $1,500. There will be one recipient for each of the award subcategories described below:

Synergy

This subcategory recognizes faculty who have integrated more than one global learning practice (museums, oral histories, virtual exchange, study abroad, libraries, Career Connections Center, performing arts, Sustainable Development Goals, service learning) into their teaching in a complementary manner. These practices may include study abroad, but only in combination with an internationalization at home strategy.

Examples of competitive applications in this subcategory may include:

  • Incorporating multiple campus resources (libraries, museums, Career Connections Center, etc.) into the same course
  • Implementing a virtual exchange or taking students to the Harn Museum of Art as part of their preparation to participate in a study abroad program
  • Incorporating oral histories into a virtual exchange or study abroad program
  • Implementing activities on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of a virtual exchange project or study abroad program

Innovation

This subcategory recognizes faculty who have implemented particularly creative global learning projects into their teaching. Projects may be deemed innovative due to their format or components (i.e., including topics, countries, or disciplines that are not usually involved in global learning at UF).

Examples of competitive applications in this subcategory may include:

  • Incorporating International Scholars Program ePortfolios into a course with other global learning elements
  • An interdisciplinary virtual exchange project connecting, for instance, a STEM discipline with an arts discipline
  • A math course that includes an experiential learning activity at the Harn Museum of Art and incorporates the Sustainable Development Goals

Impact

This subcategory recognizes faculty whose global learning project implementations have been particularly impactful within our UF, local, or international community. Impact may be measured by the number of students who participated, the number and diversity of the international collaborators involved, or social or academic impact.

Examples of competitive applications in this subcategory may include:

  • A global learning project embedded in a large enrollment online course that includes every student in the course
  • An oral history project that highlights a unique demographic within the community
  • A virtual exchange project with international partners in multiple locations
  • A capstone course that requires students to connect their project to the Sustainable Development Goals

Scholarship & Dissemination

This subcategory recognizes faculty who have published and/or presented on their global learning project outcomes to a variety of audiences.

Examples of competitive applications in this subcategory may include:

  • Faculty who have presented about their global learning projects at multiple conferences, including conferences within their academic discipline where attendees may be less familiar with global learning practices
  • Faculty who have published peer-reviewed articles on their global learning project outcomes (qualitative and/or quantitative data)

Eligibility

  • These awards are open to all full-time UF faculty (adjunct and visiting faculty are not eligible).
  • Graduate students, postdocs, and staff are not eligible.
  • Individuals cannot be considered for an award if they have received a Global Learning Excellence Award within the previous two years.
  • Individuals who have been nominated for an International Educator Award by their college are eligible to apply. International Educator Award recipients are not eligible for the Global Learning Excellence Awards for two years.
  • This is an award for internationalization at home. Other international programs (e.g., study abroad, research opportunities) may be mentioned in the application only if they were offered as an enhancement for or a continuation of an internationalization at home activity.

Special consideration will be given to applicants who:

  • Have a demonstrated record of global learning project implementation and sustainability (have implemented global learning projects multiple times - either the same project or different ones) in undergraduate or graduate courses
  • Have completed professional development programs that count toward the Global Teaching and Learning Certificate offered through the Center for Teaching Excellence’s Passport to Great Teaching program
  • Have evaluated the effectiveness of their global learning projects
  • If teaching undergraduate students, have gone above and beyond in connecting their students with the International Scholars Program (ISP) through, for example, requiring their students to attend the ISP ePortfolio showcase, incorporating ISP ePortfolios into their course, etc.
