The University of Florida requires health insurance for all UF students. This insurance must meet the U.S. Affordable Care Act (ACA) requirements. All J-2 dependents who are not UF students must have health insurance meeting U.S. Department of State’s basic J visa holder insurance requirements. Insurance documentation for J-2 dependents must be submitted to insurance@ufic.ufl.edu.

Important Guidance for Student Insurance Process

  • An insurance information hold will appear on your student record hold screen in ONE.UF.
    • This is only an information hold and does not satisfy the actual health insurance requirement.
    • To remove the hold, you must read the information and agree that you understand it by clicking “submit.”
  • An insurance charge will appear on your student campus finance (bursar) screen 30 days prior to the start of each semester.
    • This charge will appear if you have not shown proof of health insurance that meets the UF/ACA requirements.
    • To waive this charge and show proof of coverage, you must submit a waiver before the deadline.

GatorGradCare

GatorGradCare meets UF/ACA health insurance requirements.

  • Eligible students (RA, TA, GA, Fellowships) must follow the above procedures to submit proof of coverage.
    • This includes agreeing to the mandatory health insurance information hold in ONE.UF, submitting documentation to UFIC, and submitting the waiver to UF Health Compliance.
    • You do not need to do anything else after successfully enrolling and completing the above steps.
  • You will see the school-sponsored plan and charge on your account until your GatorGradCare is confirmed.
    • Do not pay this charge. It will automatically be removed once your eligibility is confirmed after the drop/add period.

What if I do not have health insurance?

Health insurance is required by both UF and the Department of State. You may purchase outside health insurance (see above), or be automatically enrolled in the school-sponsored plan (United Healthcare). The mandatory student health insurance requirement is an “opt out” system. Students must show proof of ACA-compliant insurance by the deadline, or else they will be automatically enrolled and charged for the school-sponsored plan.

What if I do NOTHING before the deadline?

You will be automatically enrolled in the school-sponsored plan, which will be charged to your account in ONE.UF. You cannot appeal this charge after the current semester’s fee payment deadline, and it is non-refundable. If you have outside health insurance, you must submit the waiver before the deadline, and the charge will be removed.
