Kaira Cabañas (Art History) is appointed the William C. Seitz Senior Fellow at the National Gallery of Art, Center for Advanced Visual Studies in Art (CASVA) for the 2021-2022 academic year. During this time, she will work toward her next book project “Deviant Histories: Radical Psychiatry and Art as Creative Care," which will be the first scholarly monograph to address the decisive impact of art and artists on international calls for asylum reform in France, Algeria, Italy, and Brazil.

This prestigious appointment supports full-time research, and scholars are expected to reside in Washington D.C. and to participate in CASVA activities throughout the fellowship period. In addition to her numerous intellectual accomplishments, Cabañas is the first Latina and first UF professor to receive the William C. Seitz Senior Fellowship from the National Gallery.
