The UF Public Utility Research Center hosted a successful in-person international training program where 11 countries came to Gainesville in October to study how their energy and broadband services can expand through the rest of the pandemic and afterward. This is the first time since January 2020 that the Public Utility Research Center has been able to bring multiple countries together to work on their most pressing infrastructure issues. The October program included 30 utility regulators and professionals from such places as diverse as The Bahamas, Mozambique, and Albania. This was the 48th program that PURC has provided the PURC/World Bank International Training Program on Utility Regulation and Strategy, and the first time since the pandemic that participants were able to gather face-to-face and learn problem-solving techniques complemented by international exchange of ideas and experiences. The program, originally funded with seed money from the World Bank, has trained almost 4,000 professionals from 156 countries and was offered twice a year pre-pandemic. The next program, the 49th PURC/World Bank International Training Program on Utility Regulation and Strategy is scheduled for June 2022.
