Reitz Union, G330.

Hosted by graduate students from TCD & the Beyond Helicopter Science Working Group

Workshop Description:

Many graduate students must conduct fieldwork as part of their thesis or dissertation research. As such, some students have recently returned from the field, and others may still be in the planning stages of their research and data collection needs. This workshop aims to facilitate a discussion about the expectations, challenges, and realities of fieldwork while examining approaches that are more inclusive of local communities and collaborators.

Topics to be discussed include:
* What expectations did you have going into the field?
* What type of challenges did you face in the field?
* How did you reconcile your fieldwork expectations vs realities?
* How can we conduct research that is inclusive, equitable, & ethical?
* How do we transform research practices that are extractive in nature (aka "helicopter science") into inclusive & equitable approaches that acknowledge the importance of local knowledge systems & contributions of local partners?
