In this talk, Dr. Dekker explores how finitude becomes manifest everyday lives and narratives of older adults, based on her ethnographic fieldwork in Brazil. Reflecting on the concept of alienation as a heuristic device, she discusses how older adults may both embody and resist a scenario of fraility and withdrawal, and traces some of the ways in which older adults reconfigure their lives and orientations to the future.
