J-1 non-degree seeking students sponsored by a UF faculty to complete a required internship or take courses toward a degree being pursued abroad are also required to receive a DS-2019 issued by the University of Florida International Center (UFIC), depending on the situation.
Foreign nationals who are seeking to engage in a prescribed course of study or participating under an active cooperative agreement (MOU) at the University of Florida will be required to obtain a J-1 visa in the non-degree category.
Below is information for other Non-Degree international students that have been accepted to a prescribed, non-degree academic program. These students, if not enrolled at a UF Exchange Partner Institution abroad, are required to pay the current non-resident tuition rate and attend UF as a J-1 Non-Degree Student, unless otherwise defined within an active UFIC cooperative agreement. J-1 Non-Degree Students must be engaged in a full-time course of study, which may include classroom instruction and/or research. J-1 Non-Degree Students must be sponsored by a UF faculty member to participate in this program at the University of Florida, unless the student is a nominated participant under an active UFIC cooperative agreement.

Demonstrate sufficient proof of funding from any source, including personal/family funds
Substantially (67%) funded by non-personal funds, such as a home institution, employer, national or local government grant, scholarship or fellowship
All J-1 Non-Degree Students must:
- Have sufficient finances for him/herself and any dependents for the entire stay in the U.S., including housing, living expenses, and tuition
- Have sufficient English language skills to funcation in the academic program as well as navigate daily life in the US.
- Be engaged in a full-time course of study (12 undergraduate/9 graduate credits per academic year, 6 credits in the summer term) including classroom instruction and/or research, unless otherwise defined within an active UFIC cooperative agreement.
Once a student has been admitted to a UF non-degree program, the academic host department submits a J-1 Non-Degree Student request through the online UFIC application portal. Host departments may require supplemental application materials to be accepted into a given non-degree program. After the request is submitted, the incoming J-1 Non-Degree Student will receive login credentials to complete their application. J-1 Non-Degree Students are responsible for submitting the following within the portal, which is explained in further detail within their online application:
