SPS Professor and renowned scholar MARY E. GINWAY has been actively contributing to the understanding and appreciation of Latin American science fiction through her participation in various events and symposiums. In Fall 2022, she attended the “Surviving the Anthropocene: The Speculative Fictions of Latin America’s Past, Present and Futures” symposium held at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) from October 13-15. Professor Ginway delivered the final keynote address on “The Evolving Field of Latin American Science Fiction,” highlighting her deep understanding of the genre’s development and significance.
In Spring 2023, Ginway continued her academic tour as one of 13 distinguished speakers at the “New Worlds in the ‘New World’: Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror in Latin America” symposium at Yale University. The event took place on March 3-4, 2023, and her presentation focused on “The Body, Transcorporality and Climate Crisis in Latin American Science Fiction.” Dr. Ginway is further exploring this thought-provoking subject as a possible book project.
In addition to her engagements in the United States, Dr. Ginway has also participated in two events in Brazil, drawing on her expertise in Portuguese language and culture. On September 15, 2022, she delivered a closing keynote speech for the virtual conference “Cartografias da Crise,” sponsored by the Universidade Federal Fluminense. Her presentation was based on her 2020 book, “Cyborgs, Sexuality, and the Undead.” Furthermore, Professor Ginway gave a brief talk at A Livraria no Reserva, a São Paulo bookstore, on August 12, 2022. This in-person event allowed her to connect with readers and enthusiasts in the heart of Brazil’s vibrant literary scene.
