Long viewed as a peculiarity of southern Europe, anarchism is now treated by historians as the most dynamic transnational revolutionary movement of the “First Globalization” (1870s-1914). This talk explores the relationship between anarchism’s “Latin” roots and its worldwide resonance. More broadly, it reflects on the challenges of writing the global history of a substantially European movement with intensely universalist ambitions.
