Akbar Seknun was born and raised on Kai Island, in the eastern part of Indonesia. He speaks Indonesian and English, and received the Indonesian Endowment Fund for Education (Lembaga Pengelola dana Pendidikan) Scholarship in 2019. Akbar earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science at Dipanegara University, and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in design and visual communications at the University of Florida. He works as a freelance graphic designer and teaches graphic design and English to children in his community.

James Gerien-Chen (History) received a Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad award, which he will use to conduct six months of research in Taiwan and Japan from January-June 2023. He will use the grant to revise a book manuscript titled Between Nation and Empire: Migration and Law in the Making of Japanese Empire in Taiwan, South China, and Southeast Asia, 1895–1950. The book examines the transregional migration of colonial Taiwanese and their role in shaping Japanese imperial expansion, Chinese state-building, and the development of overseas Chinese networks. Dr. Muthusami Kumaran, Associate Professor of Nonprofit Management & Community Organizations, Department of Family, Youth & Community Sciences, CALS, has received a grant from the U.S. Embassy - Seoul, South Korea. The COM Department of Emergency Medicine’s Section of Global Health recently completed another successful visit to its partner institutions in Ghana. The team taught point-of-care ultrasound courses to physicians and nurses at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra. In addition, we also provided an intermediate as well as an advanced level ultrasound trainin as pre- and post-conference courses for the 6th African Conference on Emergency Medicine, which took place in Accra, Ghana.
