A Successful Japan Spring Festival Promoted Cultural Exchange

The International Center and the Consulate General of Japan in Miami partnered to present the Japan Spring Festival @ UF last week. Hundreds of staff, faculty and students participated in this activity at the Reitz Union. Participants enjoyed Japanese cultural live music, tea demonstrations, origami, and calligraphy, and learned about educational and professional programs in Japan. The Consul General of Miami, Kazuhiro Nakai delivered remarks on friendship and future collaborations. Big thanks to the following collaborators!

After losing everything when her home of Luhansk, Ukraine, was occupied by pro-Russian separatists in 2014, Natalia Pluzhnyk moved to Severodonetsk, Ukraine. There, she worked on the front lines of the war in eastern Ukraine as a volunteer — all while being terrified Russia would try to seize her home again.

To ensure the safety of her teenage daughter and provide her with an opportunity to attend college, she moved to Gainesville in 2017.

“I didn’t see any prospects of a safe future,” Pluzhnyk said.

Fulbright Top Producer Reception in Washington D.C.

Earlier this month, the University of Florida was named a Fulbright Top Producing Institution for U.S. Students for the first time in 10 years by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

This recognition is given to the U.S. colleges and universities that received the highest number of applicants selected for the 2022-2023 Fulbright U.S. Student Program.

Dean Marta L. Wayne and Kelly J. Medley, Lecturer and External Scholarship & Fellowship Coordinator at the University Honors Program attended the Association of International Education Administrators Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. where top producers where recognized.

UF Named Fulbright Top Producing Institution For U.S. Students for The First Time in 10 years

The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs named the University of Florida a Fulbright Top Producing Institution for U.S. Students for the first time in 10 years. This recognition is given to the U.S. colleges and universities that received the highest number of applicants selected for the 2022-2023 Fulbright U.S. Student Program. International Delegations Visit UFIC

Japanese Delegation

Shiga University, the first university in Japan to establish a program in Data Science visited UF last week to discuss collaborations in AI with the Provost Office, David Reed, Director of the Artificial Intelligence Academic Initiative Center, and with NVIDIA Corporation.

Their visit to UFIC is the first step in developing an MOU, which we hope will ultimately lead to diverse research and educational partnerships with the University of Florida.
