The Emerging Pathogens Institute (UF EPI) has released a new video spotlighting international research led by Dr. Arie Havelaar in collaboration with Haramaya University and UF Ph.D. students Amanda Ojeda and Ibsa Ahmed. Their study focuses on Campylobacter, a genus of bacteria responsible for roughly 200 million cases of diarrhea globally each year.

Using a multidisciplinary approach—combining epidemiology, social sciences, and genomics—the team examined how exposure to Campylobacter affects child health. They found that 25% of infants were colonized within a month of birth, rising to 90% by age one, with 75% of infections linked to chickens. Their work could help shape prevention strategies to reduce infections and improve health outcomes for children in low- and middle-income countries.
