Title:
The Value(s) of Sustainability: Exploring Priorities and Bridging Differences in the Pursuit of Campus and Community Resilience
Project Description:

This project connected students from the University of Florida Program for Sustainability and the Built Environment with Saxion University in Eberswalde, Netherlands. The project asked students to engage and explore forms of tangible and intangible cultural heritage in both their pre-collegiate home communities and their respective college campuses and communities. The students also considered how values create priorities in how we focus our attention, intention, and action regarding issues of sustainability. They connected different ways we frame these values, evaluated their risks and rewards, and proposed management responses to better bridge differences and reduce the risks of negative outcomes for communities.

Learning Outcomes:
  • The courses in which our instructors designed this VE experience requires the students to simultaneously learn some principles and practices in community planning, social-ecological systems (SES) resilience, and corporate governance. Thus, understanding global systems will be a valuable competency as it will enable them to better relate to the focal-scale dynamics of the systems and institutions the student groups and their international peers have personally experienced, as well as the cross-scale interactions of their focal SES and stakeholder values with other systems nested within it (sub-scale) and those within which it may be embedded (supra-scale).
  • Expand knowledge of cultural worldview frameworks
  • Enhance cultural self-awareness
