A Jean Monnet Speaker Series Talk Featuring Anchrit Wille Leiden University

Since 1995, confirmation hearings in the European Parliament have become a central element in the process of appointing the European Commission. This talk explores the impact of these hearings, including the EP’s demands for more detailed information on nominees prior to hearings, which has allowed MEPs to sharpen their focus on nominees’ policy priorities, and streamline post-hearing evaluations. Through these activities the EP has been able to strengthen its leverage over both the Commission’s personnel choices and its policy direction.
