A growing trend in study abroad programs is the opportunity to participate in research, internships, and service learning abroad. Programs that offer research, internship, or service learning generally qualify for academic credit for your experience overseas.

International Internships

You can earn academic credit on a study abroad program and complete an internship at the same time. Internship placements are arranged by the host university or third-party program provider. You can also arrange an international internship and earn credit from UF for UF internships. Simply coordinate with a faculty member to serve as a sponsor for the internship credits and you will be enrolled in UF credits for the duration of the program. You will be enrolled in the CISI International Health Insurance plan according to standard policies while abroad. Please contact the Study Abroad Advisor for more information on internships. See below UF Sponsored programs that offer international internships:

Independent Study or Research Abroad

You can conduct research abroad or do an independent study abroad. Many foreign universities are conducting interesting and important research in emerging fields and many U.S. students are seeking these opportunities to enhance their educational careers. Our exchange partners may be able to sponsor independent study or research opportunities for our students while abroad, and may even be able to offer university credit for these opportunities. Contact your Study Abroad Advisor for Independent study and research abroad opportunities.  See below UF Sponsored programs that offer international research opportunities:

UF Summer Undergraduate International Research Program:

International Service Learning/Volunteering

There are many opportunities to help communities abroad through volunteering and service learning. Many of these programs work in fields such as agriculture, education and public health, and may be a great way to learn an important field while studying abroad. Several UF Sponsored and Non-UF Programs offer service learning and volunteer opportunities for academic credit.  See list of UF Sponsored programs that offer Service Learning.
