3/15/2019 (Gainesville, FL) – The U.S. Department of State has announced the U.S. higher education institutions that sent the most students overseas on the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program in the academic year 2017-2018. The University of Florida (UF) has been recognized for its success in making international study and internships more accessible and inclusive for American students of all backgrounds through the Gilman Program.

The State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, in collaboration with the Institute of International Education, compiles the list, organized by small, medium, and large four-year institutions, and associate’s colleges. UF has been cited for success in the category of Greatest Growth: Students with Disabilities. This May, The UF International Center will announce the names, destination countries, and programs of Uf Gilman Awardees.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program provides scholarships to U.S. undergraduates with financial needs for study abroad, including students from diverse backgrounds and students going to non-traditional study abroad destinations. Established under the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000, Gilman Scholarships provide up to $5,000 for American students to pursue overseas study for college credit. Since the program’s establishment in 2001, over 1,300 U.S. institutions have sent more than 28,000 Gilman scholars to nearly 150 countries around the globe.

“We are tremendously honored to be recognized for our efforts to practice diversity and inclusion as we build and implement education abroad programs for UF students. Scholarship recipients have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of other cultures, languages, and economies. Making them better prepared to assume leadership roles in their future employment is one of the priorities of our study abroad programs.”, said Leonardo Villalón, Dean of the UF International Center.
