Virtual Session on Immigration 101 Hosted by UFIC's ISS

UFIC's International Student Services office provided training regarding F-1 student visa regulations for UF Faculty and Staff.

Attendees gained practical knowledge of immigration requirements and terminology related to assisting international students in attaining and maintaining legal status in the U.S. They also developed working knowledge of the assistance and guidance available through the UF International Center, such as I-20 requests for newly admitted international students who will attend UF in F-1 visa status, maintaining F-1 status, registration requirements, and employment eligibility and restrictions.

International Collaboration Celebrated Women's Day at UF

In collaboration with the UF Department of Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies and Makerere University, the International Center hosted "Together for Women's Empowerment" with Dr. Brenda Boonabaana. Dr. Boonabaana is faculty in the Department of Forestry, Biodiversity and Tourism at Makerere University, Uganda. She is a Feminist Geographer and an advocate of women and girls' empowerment, food secure communities, as well as healthy, sustainable, and resilient environment.

UF Gator Band Bringing 350 students to Ireland for St. Patrick’s Festival

Welsh Government Officer Visited UF for Wales Pre-Departure Study Abroad Program

Eoghan O’Regan, Deputy Head of North America from the Welsh Government came to UF on Monday to meet with students attending the UF in Wales – Writing in International Studies, Law, & Relations study abroad program. Helicopter Science Workshop Offered New Perspective on Research Collaborations

In this talk, Elizabeth Hoffecker shared practices that she and her colleagues at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) D-Lab have developed for engaging in respectful, mutually-enriching, long-term collaborations with scholars and practitioner-researchers from around the world. Drawing on over 10 years of experience conducting international development research at MIT involving projects and collaborators from over 10 countries on six continents, Elizabeth talked about strategies and addressed common pitfalls and challenges encountered in forming and sustaining research internationally.

A Successful Japan Spring Festival Promoted Cultural Exchange

The International Center and the Consulate General of Japan in Miami partnered to present the Japan Spring Festival @ UF last week. Hundreds of staff, faculty and students participated in this activity at the Reitz Union. Participants enjoyed Japanese cultural live music, tea demonstrations, origami, and calligraphy, and learned about educational and professional programs in Japan. Ukrainians Find Strength in Gainesville Community, 1 Year Into War

After losing everything when her home of Luhansk, Ukraine, was occupied by pro-Russian separatists in 2014, Natalia Pluzhnyk moved to Severodonetsk, Ukraine. There, she worked on the front lines of the war in eastern Ukraine as a volunteer — all while being terrified Russia would try to seize her home again.

To ensure the safety of her teenage daughter and provide her with an opportunity to attend college, she moved to Gainesville in 2017.
