“Latin America Writes Back 2.0: Political and Environmental Crisis in Science Fiction” commemorates and extends UF’s landmark 2005 symposium, “Latin America Writes Back.” That symposium identified UF as an early pioneer in the growing field of Latin American SF studies and featured talks by author/scholar Edmundo Paz Soldán and scholar J. Andrew Brown. This new workshop brought back those key participants of the 2005 event and added other scholars and writers who are helping to shape the future of SF in the Caribbean, the Andean region, the Southern Cone, and Mexico, and Brazil.

UF is a 20 Year Top Producer of Gilman Scholars

The University of Florida was recognized today by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs for having produced the most Gilman recipients over the past twenty years in the Large Institution category.

Dr. Hao Gan Awarded a UF Pellizzi Prize

Every two years the Club of Bologna under the sponsorship of FederUnacoma, the Italian Agricultural Machinery Manufacturers Association, awards the Pellizzi Prize for the worldwide best Ph.D. dissertation in the area of agricultural machinery and mechanization. Dr. Hao Gan, who received his Ph.D. under the direction of Prof. Won-Suk "Daniel" Lee in UF's Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering, was announced as the latest winner on October 22nd in Bologna. This is the third consecutive former UF student to win the award. At an early age, Pedro Sanchez expressed a fascination and passion for the soil on which he grew up in Cuba.

More specifically, he was drawn to the deep rust colors of the island’s tropical soil. That same soil that stained his play clothes was where he learned to grow fruit on his family’s farm in Caimito del Guayabal.

“One of my fondest memories as a child is playing with the rich red soil, curious about its color and properties at my family’s business,” he said.

UF English Department professor Dr. Malini Johar Schueller's book, Campaigns of Knowledge: Pedagogies of U.S. Colonialism and Occupation in the Philippines and Japan, was recently republished by the Ateneo de Manila Press in the Philippines with a new cover and a Foreword by a Filipino scholar. Her book brings together the fields of American cultural studies, postcolonial studies, Asian American studies, and transpacific studies.
