Dengue virus has circulated in Thailand for decades, and researchers are starting to understand some of the factors that move its four different variations, or serotypes, around the country. Dengue, like malaria, is spread by mosquitoes that acquire the virus when they bite an infected person or wild primate. They then transfer it into a new host when they bite again.

But the secret to how dengue moves around human populations may not be as closely tied to its winged vector as one may think, says UF biologist Derek Cummings.

The UF in Pavia Engineering and Arts in Italy program has started and will run through August 8, 2021. The group of ten students from the University of Florida who arrived in Pavia are attending an Intensive program in Physics organized by the University of Pavia with the Globec Center, the Alma Mater Ticinensis Foundation and Learn International. Students will reside in Palazzo Vistarino, the seat of the international courses that the Foundation co-organizes and manages with the University.

Dr. Kathleen Colverson Receives Fulbright Award for Ecuador

Congratulations to Dr. Kathleen Colverson, Associate Research Scientist at IFAS UF, for receiving the Fulbright Scholar Award for research in Ecuador for the Spring of 2022. She will be working with Drs. Myriam Paredes and Steven Sherwood of FLACSO University to study ways to better integrate men and boys into rural household nutrition. This is an area she has been working on in other countries with both the USAID Livestock and Food Safety Labs, and is of interest in South America as well.
