The African Cassava Agronomy Initiative (ACAI) project scientists are working on optimizing crop models to improve the prediction of the AKILIMO decision support tools. The team is evaluating the performance of the Light Interception and Utilization (LINTUL) and Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT) to predict the attainable yield of cassava under well managed agronomic field trial.

Eight University of Florida students recently earned the prestigious Boren Award to learn languages overseas, making UF the only top 10 public university to place on the Boren Awards’ Top-Performing Institutions list for Boren Scholarships.

The Boren Awards grant scholarships and fellowships to students who would like to study languages and cultures of regions important to U.S. national security interests. Professor Ilaria Capua’s recently published book on the impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic has reached number one on the non-fiction bestseller list in Italy. Il Dopo: Il virus che ci ha constretto cambiare mappa mentale (Afterwards : The virus that has forced us to change our mental maps) is a call to action so as to make fundamental changes for a more sustainable world in the aftermath of the pandemic . Professor Capua is Professor and Director of the One Health Center of Excellence at UF. A veterinarian by training, she is a world-renowned virologist specializing in influenza viruses. She is also a former member of the Italian parliament.

Kaira M. Cabañas (Art History) participated, along with scholars Luiz Camillo Osorio and Luis Peréz-Oramas, in an online "roundtable" discussion celebrating the work and legacy of Brazilian artist, inventor, and designer Abraham Palatnik, who continually explored visual rhythms as a way of expanding what is perceptible through visual art. Palatnik died from Covid-19 in Rio de Janeiro on May 9, 2020. He was ninety-two years old. To view the homage paid to this singular artist, please visit this link.

The Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) announced on May 28, 2020 that Raymond Mailhot Vega, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology at the University of Florida Health Proton Therapy Institute, was named a recipient of ASCO’s prestigious Conquer Cancer Global Oncology Foundation Young Investigator Award.
