Comparative Perspectives on Forests and Forest Learning

Students from the University of Florida (UF) and the Federal University of Acre (UFAC) will compare forest knowledge and perceptions between Southwestern Amazonia and the Southeastern U.S.  Following an exchange of short videos that introduce professors and students from each university, groups of students (2-3 from each university) will work together to jointly prepare video ‘shorts’ that offer comparative perspectives of a subset of 7 forest components observed on their respective campuses.

Social-Ecological Impacts of Dams and Infrastructure Projects

This course creates interaction among students and faculty at three institutions and research groups at the University of Florida, the Federal University of Rondônia, and the University of São Paulo to exchange and build knowledge and build shared expereiences regarding social-ecological impacts and adaptive management of dam and other types of infrastructure in the US, Brazil, and other countries.

Explore the characteristics of the Latin American work environment and prepare for a career working with or in the region, our close neighbor. This course features synchronous discussions with UF alumni who will share their experiences working in or with Latin America at different career stages and in a variety of professional fields such as business, government, non-profits, healthcare, and STEM fields. Course topics include developing leadership skills, building a global professional profile, navigating organizational culture, and learning about the growing Latino community in the U.S. workplace.

UF Legacy in the Amazon

Designing a Global Classroom

The module introduced concepts of global competence and a teaching approach that leads to improved critical thinking and problem solving from a global perspective. The module focused on appropriate technology use to connect classrooms across borders where students could ask questions to virtual guests about how elementary students learn in other world regions.

Beyond Borders: Human Rights in the Americas

Students in an English language class from Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla, Colombia and those in University of Florida class on Human Rights in Latin America were partnered to discuss human rights across the Americas over the course of a semester. Building from the idea of having a pen pal, students were divided into small groups and provided discussion prompts about key themes/topics. The students discussed the defined topics by exchanging five letters with their partners throughout the semester with a synchronous Zoom meeting to talk at the close of the activity.
