At an early age, Pedro Sanchez expressed a fascination and passion for the soil on which he grew up in Cuba.

More specifically, he was drawn to the deep rust colors of the island’s tropical soil. That same soil that stained his play clothes was where he learned to grow fruit on his family’s farm in Caimito del Guayabal.

“One of my fondest memories as a child is playing with the rich red soil, curious about its color and properties at my family’s business,” he said.

Dr. Malini Johar Schueller's Book Recently Republished by Ateneo de Manila Press

UF English Department professor Dr. Malini Johar Schueller's book, Campaigns of Knowledge: Pedagogies of U.S. Colonialism and Occupation in the Philippines and Japan, was recently republished by the Ateneo de Manila Press in the Philippines with a new cover and a Foreword by a Filipino scholar. Her book brings together the fields of American cultural studies, postcolonial studies, Asian American studies, and transpacific studies.

Edited by Professor of African Politics, and Dean of the UF International Center, Leonardo A. Villalón, The Oxford Handbook of the African Sahel was published recently. The book is not only comprehensive work on the Sahel as a region available in English, but also provides interdisciplinary coverage of a little-known region. Vanessa Campoverde Shares Work with University of Philippines Los Baños

Vanessa Campoverde, a UF IFAS Extension agent working in Miami-Dade County with ornamental nurseries since 2011, will be sharing her experiences with Filipino researchers, students, and various stakeholders at the University of the Philippines Los Baños. Her lecture will focus on Integrated Pest Management of ornamental plant nurseries which are places where growers grow plants such as orchids, bromeliads, succulents, and overall foliage for offices and landscape like palms, flowering trees, etc.

Campoverde believes sharing her experiences is important because her nursery is #1 in ornamental plant production in Florida and the state of Florida is #1 in the US in foliage plant...

Katelyn Flaherty is a 4th year MD-PhD student in the Department of Environmental and Global Health. Her research focuses on pre-hospital care in low-and-middle income countries, specifically Ghana.

Globally, leading causes of death among children one month to 5 years old include respiratory infections, diarrheal disease, and malaria, all of which are highly treatable early in the disease-course yet frequently progress to emergencies in low-and-middle-income countries.
