GAINESVILLE, FL – The UF Center for Latin American Studies (LAS) is proud to announce the winner of the 2018 Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs (CLASP) Junior Faculty Teaching Award is Dr. Rosana Resende. Created in 2013, the award seeks to “recognize excellence in teaching Latin American Studies designated courses.” This is the second time that a LAS faculty member has received this award; Dr. Ieva Jusionyte was the 2015 award recipient.

Dr. Sandra L. Russo, Director of the Office for Global Research Engagement (OGRE) in the University of Florida's International Center (UFIC), was recognized by the UF Association of Academic Women as AAW Woman of Distinction 2018. Dr. Russo was presented with the award at the Women's History Month Awards Reception on March 14th, at the Earl and Christy Powell University House.

On Friday, February 9th, faculty gathered to learn a few “tricks of the trade” to recruit students to their Study Abroad programs.

Mike Weigold (Journalism), Jennifer Kaufman (IFAS), Phillip Kaufman (IFAS), Muthusami Kumaran (FYCS), and Angela Miller (Study Abroad) presented on topics such as marketing principles, articulating the value of your Study Abroad program, developing a marketing mindset, and the marketing toolkit. Ping Neo, Director of International Engineering Programs at the UF Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering visited Madrid, Spain where she met with colleagues at Spanish engineering partner schools. Those schools included Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and Universidad Comillas Pontificia, where together are looking to bring further international awareness and engagement into the field of engineering. With this trip she hopes to encourage more globally-minded engineers to keep up with the increasingly connected environment.

The UF Center for Latin American Studies is proud to announce the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) 2018 Kalman Silvert Award winner is Distinguished Professor Emerita, Dr. Carmen Diana Deere. The Kalman Silvert Award was created in 1982 and "recognizes senior members of the profession who have made distinguished lifetime contributions to the study of Latin America, and is LASA's highest honor." This is the second time that a former UF Latin American Studies Center Director has received this award; Dr. Helen Safa (deceased) was the 2007 Kalman Silvert Award recipient.

Recently, UFIC staff attended and presented at the AIEA annual conference held in Washington, DC.
