In a collaborative effort with Rahmane Idrissa and Mamadou Bodian, two of his former Ph.D. students from West Africa, and a team of colleagues from six countries in the region, Dean Leonardo A. Villalón recently published two books: Between Knowledge and Worship: Activism and Religious Movements in the Universities of the Sahel and Democratic Struggle, and Institutional Reform, and State Resilience in the African Sahel.

UFIC Says Good-bye to Scott Davis

During a "crazy hat" themed farewell, the International Center celebrated Scott Davis’ UF/State of Florida retirement (23 years combined from UF and various State jobs) on his last day in the office, August 20, 2020.

Scott served at the English Language Institute, as well at UFIC’s International Student Services unit. Additionally, he successfully served as the Director of UFIC’s Exchange Visitors Services for the last 13 years. We wish Scott and his long-time partner, Harald, a great relocation in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Thank you, Scott, for all your contributions to the internationalization efforts at the University of Florida. We’ll see you in December!

Coray Colina Receives Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to Mexico for a Research/Teaching Appointment

Congratulations to the department of chemistry professor Coray Colina who has received a Fulbright Scholar award for the 2020-201 academic year. Dr. Colina will conduct research on molecular chimeras for opioid receptor modulators and serve as a lecturer at Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM) in Mexico City. Carmen Martínez-Novo Named the First Woman Editor in Chief of the Latin American Research Review

Dr. Carmen Martínez-Novo, professor at the Center for Latin American Studies, was named the new editor in chief of the Latin American Research Review (LARR). This nomination marks the first time a woman has served in the position of editor in chief for the LARR since its founding in 1965. Martínez-Novo’s tenure as editor in chief will start in January 2021 and end in December 2025.

The University of Florida International Center (UFIC) invites students, faculty, staff and alumni to enter its annual international photography contest. There are three categories this year. Each entrant may submit up to two digital photos in only one chosen category. All photographs must portray the theme "Global Culture".

UFIC's Townhall for International Students Held Successfully

After the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) rescinded their new guidelines, and in response to many questions from our international students, on Friday, July 24, 2020, the UF International Center (UFIC) held a TownHall for all UF international students.

UFIC hosted a Zoom Town Hall and addressed questions related to F1 Visa Status and the Fall 2020 semester. Topics related to Registrations, Temporary Leave, Practical Training, and more were discussed and questions were answered by UFIC administrators before and during the highly attended meeting. Project Summaries Presented at Puerto Rico Re_Start 3 Available Now

A summary of all the projects presented over the Puerto Rico Re_Start 3 workshop at available now. The Center for Hydro-generated Urbanism (CHU - UF) acted as the host of the activities and actively engaged in logistics and academics with the SOA visitors. Sponsored by Dean Chimay Anumba from the College of Design, Construction, and Planning (DCP), and Director Jason Alread from the School of Architecture, ideas were jointly developed for an International Project + Research Workshop, to be held yearly in Puerto Rico.
