The First UF Undergraduate Study Abroad in Haiti

The purpose of the Environmental & Global Health (EGH) Study Abroad program in Haiti was to provide students with opportunities where they would grapple with external disruptions to what have become adaptive contexts and supporting fluid (and marginalized/vulnerable) populations. Throughout their experiences they learned public health skills and knowledge through various interdisciplinary methods and practices in the very setting where these global health challenges persist. Students had the opportunity to practice research methods in the field, in addition to contributing to the efforts of local host organizations and communities.

There are more than 7,000 languages on Earth, yet half of the world’s 7.6 billion people speak just 24 of them and 95 percent speak just 400 of them. That leaves five percent of the global population spread across 6,600 different languages, hundreds of them now spoken by less than ten people.

American WWII Veteran and Retired UF Professor Honored by French Consul General

In the name of the French Republic, the Consul General of France Clément Leclerc, presented Mr. Donald Rothwell, former Professor at the University of Florida, with the Legion of Honor medal. As a Staff Sergeant in the 36th Air Service Squadron of the Army of the United States, Mr. Donald Rothwell fought alongside France during World War II. 

For his service, he received the insignias of “Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur” (Knight in the Legion of Honor”) on May 15th, 2018.

UF International Student Eva Casado Wins 2018 VSA Young Soloists Competition

Three young musicians and a group ensemble have been named as winners of the 2018 VSA International Young Soloists Competition, a Jean Kennedy Smith and Arts and Disability program at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. One of the winners is UF international student Eva Casado Ariza, age 22.

Eva is a violinist and conductor who was diagnosed at age 12 with post-viral Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. She is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Music, with concentrations in Violin Performance and Instrumental Conducting at the University of Florida. John K. Schueller Elected Fellow of the International Academy of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering faculty member John K. Schueller was elected last month as a Fellow of the International Academy of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering. With his election, there are now six iAABE fellows from the U.S.A. Professor Schueller also received the High Merit Award from the International Commission of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (formerly Commission Internationale du Genie Rural) for his “outstanding achievements in promoting the next generation of agricultural and biosystems engineering leaders”. The awards were presented at the CIGR Congress held every four years, this year in Antalya, Turkey.

UF/IFAS Global honored four faculty and staff members on April 25th for their outstanding research, teaching and scholarship around the globe. The winners:

• Dr. Don Behringer in the Fisheries and Aquatics Sciences program won the 2018 IFAS Global International Fellow award for his many international activities, including research on spiny lobsters and blue crabs in the Caribbean and South America.
